O’ Gem hued Lord! If you ask what we need
to practice our Margazhi vows as mandated by our elders –
Milky white conches that make the whole world quake
With their booming sound, like your Panchajanyam*;
Broad and wide rawhide drums; Servitors to sing your hymns;
Radiant lamps, Pennants and Awnings;
Grant us these O’ Lord who survived the deluge
as an infant floating on a Banyan tree leaf!
*Panchajanyam – Krishna’s conch
மாலே மணிவண்ணா மார்கழிநீ ராடுவான்
மேலையார் செய்வனகள் வேண்டுவன கேட்டியேல்
ஞாலத்தை எல்லாம் நடுங்க முரல்வன
பால்அன்ன வண்ணத்துஉன் பாஞ்ச சன்னியமே
போல்வன சங்கங்கள் போய்ப்பா டுடையனவே
சாலப் பெரும்பறையே பல்லாண்டு இசைப்பாரே
கோல விளக்கே கொடியே விதானமே
ஆலின் இலையாய் அருளேலோர் எம்பாவாய்.
In this verse, the girls request Krishna to grant things they need to complete their vows. “O’ Krishna, dark gem hued Lord! Our revered elders have mandated us to practice our Margazhi bathing vows. For this purpose, we need the following. We need milky white conches which make the whole world tremble as your own conch Panchajanyam does. We will blow these and walk the streets early morning to wake up people to sing your praise.
We need broad and wide rawhide drums to sound as we continue to your temple. We need servitors who sing your hymns. We want radiant lamps to light our way, Flags to announce our arrival, Awnings to protect us from the early morning dew. O’ Krishna, you survived the deluge as an infant floating on a Banyan tree leaf. Please grant us all these”
