Thirikadugam – 95

Blight of hunger that gnaws at wisdom and spoils it,
desire that spoils friendship of wise men,
anger that doesn’t tolerate foe’s harsh words –
these three are forces that erode good karma.

அறிவு அழுங்கத் தின்னும் பசி நோயும், மாந்தர்
செறிவு அழுங்கத் தோன்றும் விழைவும், செறுநரின்
வெவ் உரை நோனா வெகுள்வும்;-இவை மூன்றும்
நல் வினை நீக்கும் படை.

When one is afflicted with hunger, it eats away and spoils his wisdom. Excessive desire for materialistic posessions spoils one’s frienship with wise men. Uncontrolled anger at harsh words of the enemy destroys oneself. These three are forces that erode away any good Karma one has earned. Hunger, desire and anger are to be controlled, else they will lay to waste one’s good Karma.

Thirikadugam – 28

Vicious man who argues nastily to win,
One who covets an unattainable thing,
One who waits to fault other’s learning –
these three tire their arms dehusking the husk.

வெல்வது வேண்டி வெகுண்டு உரைக்கும் நோன்பியும்
இல்லது காமுற்று இருப்பானும், கல்விச்
செவிக் குற்றம் பார்த்திருப்பானும்,-இம் மூவர்
உமிக் குற்றுக் கை வருந்துவார்.

The vicious man who talks angrily in order to win an argument, the man who covets the unattainable, the man who waits to find fault in opponent’s knowledge – these three are like men who tire their arms trying to dehusk the husk. Rice has already been removed and only the husk is left over. These three are like those who try to dehusk it again. What they do is useless and will only tire them.

Thirikadugam – 24

Sweet words of an attractive lissome courtesan,
toad that’s baited in the hook, excessive civility
of hardened enemies – these three
are like quicksand that sucks in.

காண் தகு மென் தோள் கணிகை வாய் இன் சொல்லும்,
தூண்டிலினுள் பொதிந்த தேரையும், மாண்ட சீர்,
காழ்த்த பகைவர் வணக்கமும்,-இம் மூன்றும்
ஆழ்ச்சிப் படுக்கும், அளறு.

This poem from Thirikadugam talks about things to be careful of. Courtesan’s words, baited toad, civility of enemies – these three look good but have dangers hidden in them. If one accepts them at face value, they will suck in like quicksand and take one’s life.

அளறு – hell / quagmire. The commentary by Punnaivana Natha mudhaliar takes it as hell. The previous phrase ஆழ்ச்சிப் படுக்கும் means to sink into. Considering the examples in the poem, I have taken it as sinking into quicksand instead of sinking into hell.

Fear that swells like sea,
desire that’s never sated,
anger due to ignorance – these three
are like animals roasted in their own lard.

அச்சம் அலைகடலின் தோன்றலும் ஆர்வுற்ற
விட்டகல் கில்லாத வேட்கையும் – கட்டிய
மெயந்நிலை காணா வெகுளியும் இம்மூன்றும்
தந்நெய்யில் தாம்பொரியு மாறு

This is poem no. 65 from Thirikadugam (திரிகடுகம்) written by poet Nalladhanar (நல்லாதனார்) about 1800 years ago. Fear, desire and anger feed on themselves and completely consume one who feels them.The poet equates them to animals that are roasted in their own lard.
