Naanmanik Kadigai – 92

To not learn while young is a sin;
generosity while in want is a sin;
anger while unaided by kin is a sin;
it’s a sin to dine at the home of unfriendly;

இளமைப் பருவத்துக் கல்லாமை குற்றம்;
வளம் இலாப் போழ்தத்து வள்ளன்மை குற்றம்
கிளைஞர் இல் போழ்தில், சினம் குற்றம்; குற்றம்,
தமர் அல்லார் கையகத்து ஊண்.

It is a sin to not learn when one is young. It is a sin to be generous and philanthropic when one himself is indigent. To be angry and itch for a fight when unaided by one’s relatives is a sin. It is a sin to eat at the home of those who are unfriendly.

Naanmanik Kadigai – 79

Careless tongue breaks a friendship;
A hard squeeze breaks the weak-minded;
Safety net of tomes breaks desires;
urge to revenge breaks oneself.

நாவன்றோ நட்பறுக்குந் தேற்றமில் பேதை
விடுமன்றோ வீங்கிப் பிணிப்பின் அவாஅப்
படுமன்றோ பன்னூல் வலையிற் கெடுமன்றோ
மாறுள் நிறுக்குந் துணிபு.

It is the careless tongue that breaks a friendship. Weak minded people will be broken if squeezed hard, as their moral fibre is not strong. When a student is caught in the safety net of books of wisdom, his sinful desires are broken. When one carries vengeance on an enemy in one’s heart, it breaks him.

Nanmani k Kadigai is a collection of moral aphorisms authored by poet Vilambi Naganar. It is thought that Vilambi is his village and Nagan was his name. There are 101 poems in Nanmani k Kadigai (Literally means 4 slivers of gems). It is generally dated to 4th Century AD.

Naanmanik Kadigai – 19

If husband is upset, his doe eyed wife is rattled;
if a scholar is upset, his learning is rattled;
if the ruled are upset, ruler is rattled;
if harp strings are upset, song is rattled.

பெற்றான் அதிர்ப்பின், பிணை அன்னாள்தான் அதிர்க்கும்;
கற்றான் அதிர்ப்பின், பொருள் அதிர்க்கும்; பற்றிய
மண் அதிர்ப்பின், மன்னவன் கோல் அதிர்க்கும்;
பண் அதிர்ப்பின், பாடல் அதிர்ந்துவிடும்.

Naanmanik Kadigai, is a collection of 101 poems written by Vilambi Naganar. This collection is considered to have been written at the same time as Silappathikaaram, around 2nd Century AD. All poems in this collection are advisory in nature. They contain 4 phrases connected by a common underlying meaning. Hence the name Naan (four) mani (gem) kadigai (fragment). Their meaning is direct and easily understood.

Naanmanik Kadigai – 102

One who knows everything,
One who knows nothing,
One who is all evil with no virtue, One
who has learned flawless, there’s no such one.

ஒருவ னறிவானும் எல்லாம் யாதொன்றும்
ஒருவ னறியா தவனும் ஒருவன்
குணன் அடங்கக் குற்றமு ளானும் ஒருவன்
கணன் அடங்கக் கற்றானும் இல்.

Poem 102 from Nanmanik kadigai. Every body has some knowledge, everybody has some faults. Accept it, and be peaceful 🙂

Naanmanik Kadigai – 95

Drunkard knows the agony of being wineless;
High flying bird knows the agony of being waterless;
Polygamous man knows the agony of being moneyless;
Agony of hiding stuff, a thief knows.

கள்ளின் இடும்பை களி அறியும்; நீர் இடும்பை
புள்ளினுள் ஓங்கல் அறியும்; நிரப்பு இடும்பை
பல் பெண்டிராளன் அறியும்; கரப்பு இடும்பை
கள்வன் அறிந்துவிடும்.

First three know the agony of shortage. The last knows the agony of ill gotten wealth.

Naanmanik Kadigai – 9

There’s no sleep for those who’re out to steal;
There’s no sleep for those who’ve lost their heart;
There’s no sleep for those in search of wealth;
for guards of that wealth too, there’s no sleep.

கள்வமென் பார்க்குந் துயிலில்லை காதலிமாட்டு
உள்ளம்வைப் பார்க்குந் துயிலில்லை ஒண்பொருள்
செய்வமென் பார்க்குந் துயிலில்லை அப்பொருள்
காப்பார்க்கும் இல்லை துயில்

Poem 9 from Nanmani k Kadigai. There’s no sleep for thieves, lovers, those in search of wealth and those protecting that wealth. To put it simply, there’s no sleep for those who desire something.

Nanmani k Kadigai – 77

There’s no new born who doesn’t die;
There’s no power that doesn’t weaken;
There’s no youth who doesn’t age;
There’s none who hasn’t seen his wealth erode.

சாவாத இல்லை, பிறந்த உயிர் எல்லாம்;
தாவாத இல்லை, வலிகளும்; மூவா
இளமை இயைந்தாரும் இல்லை; வளமையில்
கேடு இன்றிச் சென்றாரும் இல்.

This poem is about the impermanence of things. “There is no power that doesn’t weaken” is akin to there is no perpetual motion machine :-).
